I thinks both of index.htm and nswong.htm do appear in Google web search results after this newsgroup(UseNet) message:

But these two webpages disappear from Google web search results after a short while later.

For what I see, though filename don't have sinificant effect for search engine to determine ranking, but do play a very important role for search engine to determine keyword.

So, I decided to change my plant image file naming convention from yymmdd99.jpg, to genus_species_yymmdd99.jpg.

MrGamma, I'm sure you was right. :-)
But this is in the assumption that, all of the links pointed at it are carrying same weight.

I think you can also consider that Vanessa Fox ( former Google employee ) has mentioned that duplicate addresses can drop your page rank value.

It is very possible that you can drive your duplicate pages into the negative values which clip them out of the index... if negative values and clipping actually exists...

But... duplicate pages can take position in the search results... it happens... for how long or with what kind of penalty is debatable...
I would think if you had alot of pages buried behind a duplicate page of sorts... you might be cutting off the link flow to those deeper pages significantly... who knows right?
